I believe it will, I changed my 76 chevy with a newer one and the screw holes were the same.
Yes the design is different, hence the part number difference, but the mounting holes are the same.
According to an old Mitchell Collision Estimating Guide an ’86 grille would NOT fit a ’79.
Different part numbers and the design look very different in the diagrams.
